FAQs

Can nominees be located anywhere?

Eligibility is not restricted by geographic location; our search is worldwide!

Is there an age minimum requirement?

To be eligible, nominees must be at least 21 years old.

Can I nominate myself?

Yes, however we recommend you include additional details, stats, and quotes from third parties who can vouch for you!

I work at Twilio, can I submit a nomination?

Unfortunately, Twilions are not eligible to nominate or be nominated.

Is there a fee to submit?

It’s totally free to submit a nomination!

What is your definition of “mentors and community builders”?

Our definition of mentors and community builders is broad and includes anyone who has helped you or others keep going on your coding journey! Who’s the person that comes to mind when you’re stuck on a bug? Who convinced you to keep trying when it felt like you’d never get rid of that same error message? Who creates clarity around career paths, introduces new learning opportunities, or fosters a culture of inclusivity on your team? Who do you see frequently holding space for conversations around coding and/or providing resources to help others grow?

Who will be selecting the honorees?

Nominees will be evaluated on their impact by a Judging Committee of DevNet Twilions and a Finalist Judging Panel comprised of industry experts from both inside and outside of Twilio.

How will judges evaluate nominees?

Nominees will be evaluated based on three ‘impact factors’:

  • Creativity: Is the individual creative and or innovative in their efforts as a mentor and/or community builder?

  • Long term impact: Will their efforts continue to make a difference to the careers of others, their community, or their organization for years to come?

  • Role model characteristics: Is this person a positive role model for the industry? Do they serve as an inspiration to the next generation of developers?

Does a nominee have to be a developer?

Not necessarily! Nominees can be in any field or position, as long as they’re having a positive impact on a community of developers/builders (i.e. people who build with code, whether professionally or not). Your nominee will likely have past and/or present developer experience, but their job title does not need to currently be “developer” or “engineer”.

Does my nominee already need to be recognized in the industry?

We welcome all nominations regardless of existing notoriety. This spotlight is especially for the people that would never shine the light on themselves but more than deserve to be recognized and celebrated.

Will nominees have an opportunity to approve the nomination?

Heads up that your nominee, if selected as an honoree, will have an opportunity to review the accuracy of the submitted entry form. They will also be asked to provide us with a headshot and grant permission for us to feature them online and on social media, and to check that confidential information has not been included.

Will there be a public announcement of the honorees?

Yes! We’ll be spotlighting honorees on the Twilio blog, social media, and other online channels/outlets.

Do I have to attend SIGNAL if I’m selected as an honoree?

There is no requirement to attend SIGNAL, but honorees will be celebrated online and on social media as part of the event’s programming.

What will the honorees’ roundtable be like?

The roundtable will be a virtual meetup with Twilio CEO Jeff Lawson and the Developer Searchlight honorees. It will be a chance to exchange stories and dig into a discussion around mentorship, community, and the future of the developer profession.
